Fire Prevention Bureau

The Hillside Fire Prevention Bureau is currently conducting Fire Prevention Week 2007.  National Fire Prevention Week is October 7-13, 2007 this year.  This year’s theme is “Practice Your Escape Plan”.  To escape a fire in your home you need to make sure that everyone in the home has practiced the plan.

The Hillside Fire Department annually provides Fire Prevention demonstrations to our local public and private elementary schools all month long.  We try to demonstrate to the children how to be safe at home and how fast accidents can happen.

We emphasize never to play with matches or hide if there is a fire in there home.  We also stress to practice an escape plan and to have a designated family meeting place outside.  Firefighters show how to “stop, drop, and roll” and how to stay low.  We also talk about cooking safety and to make sure the batteries in their smoke detectors are changed when we change our clocks.  Finally, firefighters demonstrate what a firefighter looks like in full turn out gear, so not to be afraid of fighters during an emergency.

The Hillside Fire Prevention Bureau, in cooperation with the NJ Division of Fire Safety provides free smoke detectors to citizen who can not afford or who can not install smoke detectors themselves.  We also provide a free home fire safety audit of there home, if requested.

See our “Hot Shots” photo page to view photos of our Fire Prevention Week.
