The Hillside Fire Department was established in 1913 and evolved into a career department starting in 1921. Hillside is located in Union County, and is in a heavily populated northeast quadrant of New Jersey. It is surrounded by the cities of Newark and Elizabeth and the townships of Union and Irvington. The township of Hillside is an urban community that has a population of almost 24, 000 residents. Hillside maintains a large industrial area which occupies 1.5 sq. miles within the township limits. Three major interstate highways crisscross Hillside. They are interstate Route 78, US Route 22 and the Garden State Parkway. Conrail’s northeast rail line also passes through Hillside, dividing the township in half. This rail line transports industrial cargo as well as passenger commuter trains. Newark Liberty International Airport as well as the Sea Ports of Newark and Elizabeth is less than five miles away. |

| The fire department staffs two fire stations, one in the Northern District and one in the Southern District. Fire Headquarters/Administrative offices are located in the Southern District on Hollywood Avenue. And Station 2 is located in the northern district on Hillside Avenue. All members of the department are NJ State certified EMTs. The fire department has a compliment of 48 firefighters and 2 administrative personnel. Included within the department are a Fire Suppression/EMS Division, a Training Division, and a Fire Prevention Bureau. The Hillside Fire Department responds annually to approximately 3,300 emergency and non-emergency incidents. |

The department’s Suppression/EMS Division staffs one Command vehicle, one Quint Company, one Engine Company and one 24 hour BLS Fire/Rescue ambulance. Hillside Fire is an active member and participant of the Union County Fire Mutual-Aid system.
